Landslide Risk Reduction Capacity Improvement Project

Posted on January 30, 2023 by News Admin

Landslides are one of the most serious natural disasters in Ecuador, accounting for more than 40% of all natural disaster victims. In Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, the population has been increasing in recent years, and residential areas have been expanding into the suburbs. Under these circumstances, the Geological and Energy Investigation Agency (IIGE) is responsible for providing technical support to the National Emergency Management and Emergency Agency and responsible local government agencies from a scientific perspective related to landslides, but it is also a newly established agency in 2018, and useful technical support that leads to the implementation of appropriate landslide countermeasure projects has not been possible.

In addition, the Risk Management Bureau, which is responsible for landslide countermeasures in Quito, has not been able to implement adequate landslide countermeasures, including early warning, land use regulations based on risk assessment, and structural measures related to landslides.

This cooperation will improve the capacity of the IIGE and Quito City Hall in relation to landslide hazards and contribute to the implementation of measures based on hazard analysis and risk assessment in landslide-prone areas in the country by improving the capacity for landslide investigation and analysis, risk assessment and hazard mapping, early warning, strengthening evacuation systems, and using risk assessment in land use regulations/development standards. The project will contribute to the implementation of measures based on hazard analysis and risk assessment in landslide-prone areas in the country.
