In Iran, natural disasters, especially earthquakes, occur frequently, claiming tens of thousands of victims every decade or so. Under these circumstances, the risk of seismic disasters in the country is increasing, especially with the expansion of Tehran city area and the construction of new buildings due to the increasing economic activities in the country, and it is necessary to update the Master Plan for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation in Tehran, which was established in 2004. In addition, in order to clarify the role to be played by the National Disaster Management Organization (NDMO) of the Ministry of Interior, the central disaster management agency, and to promote the formulation of disaster management plans and prior investment in disaster management in cities nationwide, the Ministry of Interior’s Urban and Regional Management Organization (MRMO), Tehran Municipal Disaster Mitigation Management Organization (TDMMO), Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MRUD) and other related ministries TDMMO, through the cooperation of the Japanese government since 1999, has been responsible not only for post-disaster relief activities (response), but also for pre-disaster earthquake preparedness and response activities in cooperation with other organizations. TDMMO is the most competent disaster management organization in Iran, including an operation center, and provides guidance to other cities.
This cooperation will contribute to strengthening the capacity of the Tehran Disaster Mitigation and Management Organization (TDMMO) and related organizations to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction (SFDR) by strengthening their capacity to share disaster prevention information and transfer technology related to municipal disaster prevention planning through the update of the Tehran Master Plan for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation. TDMMO and related organizations by strengthening the capacity of TDMMO and related organizations to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction.
