Col to Col, a brand operated by CACICA, is selling a simple wood-chopping machete called “Kurohimori (Black Fire Machete)” on Make. The period is from January 12 to February 26, with prices starting at 33,408 yen.
In the camping scene, small splitting of firewood for a campfire is essential. Batoning with a small knife or a small machete is well established, but the size of firewood that can be chopped is limited due to the small size of the tool. To address this issue, we have developed a tough machete with a 146 mm blade length that can split thicker firewood and even hard hardwoods.
Kurohimori is manufactured in Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, which has a long history of manufacturing cutlery. The company aims to create hatchets that combine practicality specialized for chopping firewood with a “beauty of use” that lifts one’s spirits just by looking at it.
The two-stage blade with an obtuse angle (30 degrees) is made for durability rather than for ease of bushcrafting, such as feather stick making. The blade is made of sturdy carbon steel that is not overly hardened during the hardening process to ensure that it can be used for a long time while being resharpened. SK85 carbon steel is harder and sharper than the stainless steel used for kitchen knives and knives in general, but it tends to rust easily when left in its bare state, so a matte black coating was applied.
The grip has a protrusion to catch the index finger, inspired by the way kendoka grip shinai (bamboo swords). The grip can be held firmly with light force without relying on grip strength. Two types of grips are available: oak (peony) and bubinga.
