Signature of Minutes of Discussion on Technical Cooperation Project for Malawi: Contribution to the development of infrastructure to improve the quality of primary education.

Posted on January 16, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Republic of Malawi on January 10 in Lilongwe for the technical cooperation project “School for All (Resident Participatory Education Development) Project.

Malawi made primary education free in 1994. Although access to schools has improved significantly and the net enrollment rate for primary education has reached 88%, the country still has significant efficiency problems, with a retention rate of 21% and a completion rate of 50%. The low quality of primary education is also a problem. According to the results of the 2012-2014 SACMEQ* survey, 6th grade students ranked last in reading and writing and second from the bottom in arithmetic out of the 10 countries surveyed. To overcome this situation, the Malawi government has identified education as one of the priority issues in its long-term national strategy “Malawi 2063” and aims to improve the quality of education through strengthening school management.

This project aims to develop community-collaborative school management models, literacy and numeracy improvement models, and dropout and retention prevention models in elementary schools nationwide, and contribute to improving the quality of elementary education by working with communities to resolve issues related to children’s learning. for all).
