Signing the Minutes of the Development Plan Study-type Technical Cooperation Discussion for Cambodia: Establishing Project Development Guidelines for Water Supply throughout Cambodia and Contributing to Improving Access to Safe Water

Posted on January 15, 2023 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Royal Government of Cambodia on January 12 in Phnom Penh on the “National Water Supply Project Planning Project,” a development program study-type technical cooperation.

Access to safe water in rural Cambodia remains low. Apart from the two water supply public corporations and 10 public water authorities in major cities, water services are provided by private operators, and an efficient division of roles between public and private water providers is needed to achieve a nationwide supply of safe water to the people.

Based on the results of Japan’s cooperation for stable water supply in the capital city of Phnom Penh, known as the “Miracle of Phnom Penh(*),” this project will support the formulation of national water project development guidelines to provide safe, sustainable, and resilient water services in order to extend this experience to rural areas. By supporting capacity building so that the Cambodian government can formulate and implement the provincial water project development plan and the master plan of the waterworks department by themselves based on these development guidelines, the project will contribute to improving access to safe water, especially in rural areas of Cambodia, and will contribute to SDG Goal 6 (Safe Water and Toilet for the World). The project will contribute to SDG Goal 6 (safe water and toilets worldwide).
