Infrastructure Development Plan for Mombasa Special Economic Zone in Donggokundu Region

Posted on January 9, 2023 by News Admin

The Port of Mombasa in Kenya is the only international trade port in the country and serves as a logistics hub for the country and landlocked countries as the starting point of the Northern East Africa Corridor that leads to Uganda, Rwanda, and other countries. Based on this geographical perspective, the “construction of a free trade port in the Donggokundu region” in Mombasa, together with the “development of a special economic zone,” was listed as a priority project in the national development plan “Vision 2030” formulated in 2007. The Japanese government will cooperate in the formulation of the “Mombasa SEZ Development Master Plan” and identify the infrastructure that needs to be developed for the SEZ development, including ports, power facilities, backbone roads in the SEZ, water supply facilities, drainage channels, etc. Based on the agreement between the governments of Japan and Kenya, the necessary infrastructure development will be considered through yen loans and grant aid. The government of Kenya and Japan have agreed to consider the development of necessary infrastructure through yen loans and grant aid.

This cooperation will strengthen the water supply capacity and stabilize rainwater drainage in the Donggokundu area, located on the south coast of Mombasa Port, by constructing water supply facilities, renovating rainwater drainage channels, and developing land for the development of a special economic zone, thereby contributing to improving the investment environment in this area.
