Local Souvenir Selection] “Kameju Dorayaki” and “Matcha Ankoju” are Asakusa souvenirs.

For the last issue of “Local Souvenir Selection” in 2022, we introduce a popular product from Asakusa, a downtown area of Tokyo. Asakusa’s Nakamise shopping street and nearby restaurants have reopened for regular business, and for the first time in about three years, the area is bustling with tourists again. When you visit Asakusa for the New Year’s first visit, please enjoy Asakusa’s unique tradition of strolling through the area eating specialty foods and selecting souvenirs.

Gokashiji Kameju “Famous Special Dorayaki

Kameju is a well-known store in Asakusa. It is a long-established wagashi store with a history of nearly 100 years. The store is located diagonally in front of the Kaminarimon gate, and is so popular that on holidays there is a long line of customers.

The store displays a variety of products, such as brown sugar-flavored Matsukaze and monaka, but people are most interested in the “Famous Special Dorayaki”. The fluffy pancake-like crust is filled with a sweet red bean paste made from Hokkaido azuki beans, and the slightly larger size makes the dorayaki a satisfying treat.

Along with “Usagiya” in Ueno and “Sogetsu” in Higashi Jujo, they are known as one of the “three best dorayaki” in Tokyo, but since each one is handmade by skilled craftsmen with great care, the number is limited and the shelf life is only three days. Even so, the freshly made taste makes it worth getting.
