Crowded Airport Security Checkpoints, Look for Smart Lanes to Reduce Wait Times

Posted on January 1, 2023 by News Admin

When flying during the year-end and New Year holidays and major holidays, one tends to encounter “waiting lines at airport security checkpoints. The reason for the congestion is simply due to the large number of people, but the slow progress of the line can be attributed to several factors, such as “the inspection is taking too long,” “there are not enough inspection lanes,” or “there are not enough inspection staff.

Airports are also taking countermeasures to this problem, such as using electronic signs to indicate which inspection areas are open, and having staff members provide guidance. Recently, some airports have introduced a system whereby ticket checks are conducted at the entrance to the inspection area, rather than in front of individual inspection lanes, to facilitate the smooth flow of travelers afterward.

Fundamentally, however, as long as there is a procedure of taking two or three trays at the front of the inspection lane, laying them side by side, and then removing laptops, smartphones, liquid items, etc. from the bag and unrolling them onto the tray for ……, there will not be a dramatic time savings.

There will be times when it takes time to remove luggage from a bag or there are fewer trays than expected, and the more trays there are (three or four), the more space is squeezed toward the back of the lane, further slowing down the line. This tends to be more pronounced during busy periods when there are more passengers who are not accustomed to flying.
