Local Souvenir Selection] “Walnut Monaka” and “Chocolate Ball MIX” from Karuizawa Souvenirs

Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture is famous for its fresh green foliage and summer resort areas, but this time we would like to introduce two souvenirs from Karuizawa in winter, a favorite destination for seasoned travelers and locals alike. With Christmas just around the corner, the town is abuzz with activities such as the “Starry Forest Christmas” event at Karuizawa Highland Church and the illumination of “Harunire Terrace,” where gifts and gourmet foods are available. Why not come out this weekend and enjoy the festivities?

Shirakaba-do “Walnut in the middle

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), foreign missionaries who visited Karuizawa made the town prosper, and Western food culture took root.

Shirakaba-do is such a representative jam and confectionery studio in Karuizawa. Originally, it began in the early 1950s when they handmade clay kamado and cooked anko (red bean paste). Using this homemade method, the company offers products that take advantage of the nuts and fruits at the foot of Mount Asama.

This “Kurumi Monaka” is the oldest Japanese confectionery in the store. Inside the crispy walnut-looking crust is a traditional thick red bean paste, which is made by simmering white bean paste until it turns reddish brown and candy-like. The texture and savory flavor of the walnuts are perfectly intertwined.
