The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Republic of Cuba on December 15 in Havana on the technical cooperation project “Capacity Building Project for Integrated Water Resources Management.
In the project area, groundwater is widely used for domestic and agricultural purposes. Groundwater is pumped across the county and aquifers, and the entire target area uses the water in a flexible manner, but the water level is declining and salinization is occurring.
In order to reduce such negative impacts and make effective use of limited water resources, this project will support the promotion of integrated water resources management in the project target areas. Specifically, the project will strengthen basin committees for collaboration and coordination among related organizations, improve the accuracy of water resource allocation plans based on scientific data, and support the updating of wide-area water resource management plans for the entire target region.
The project will mainly support the Cuban Water Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture, and will contribute to the promotion of integrated water resources management through strengthening coordination among basin committees and water users, and enhancing monitoring capacity, thereby contributing to SDG Goals 6 (safe water and toilets worldwide) and 13 (concrete measures against climate change).
