International Emergency Assistance for Flood Damage in Republic of South Sudan -Delivery of Donated Goods

Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for flood damage in the Republic of South Sudan have been delivered to the country.

Emergency relief supplies for the Republic of South Sudan arrived in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on December 13. At 11:00 (local time) on the same day, a ceremony was held at the Juba International Airport to hand over the supplies, attended by Mr. Manasseh Romolo Waya, Chairman of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) and Mr. Admie Agui, Deputy Director General of the Humanitarian Assistance Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from the South Sudanese side, and Ambassador Naohiro Tsutsumi of Japan to South Sudan and Mr. Fuyuki Sagara, Director General of JICA South Sudan Office. The ceremony was held at the same time.

At the handover ceremony, Chairman Manasseh expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance and stated that the relief supplies would be delivered immediately to the affected areas in the four states that were severely damaged. In response, Ambassador Tsutsumi expressed his hope that the aid would contribute to the realization of human security, and Director Sagara said that the relief supplies were a sign of solidarity with South Sudan by the Japanese people, who have experienced many disasters.

The flooding in South Sudan, which has occurred for the past four years, was the largest in the country’s history, and the arrival of relief supplies came immediately after President Kiir renewed his request for assistance from the international community in late November.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
