Based on the results of the various ODA projects that the Government of Tanzania has collaborated with the Japanese government in the Lower Amosi Irrigation District of Kilimanjaro Region, the Agricultural Development Center in the district was reorganized as the Kilimanjaro Agricultural Training Center (KATC) to train agricultural technicians from all over the country, and a system was established to spread irrigated rice cultivation technology throughout Tanzania. The KATC has established a system to disseminate irrigated rice cultivation technology throughout Tanzania. Through subsequent cooperative projects, the Japanese government improved the capacity of the KATC and trained irrigated rice farmers, and a training model was established that directly benefits farmers. However, with the trend toward decentralization, it was necessary to transfer the knowledge and technology accumulated at KATC to the Agricultural Training Institute (MATI) in charge of each region in order to disseminate irrigated rice cultivation technology throughout Tanzania.
This cooperation has improved rice productivity through the provision of training on rice cultivation techniques for farmers and capacity building of research, training, and extension institutions on rice varieties and seed multiplication of cultivation techniques, and contributed to the extension of training developed through this cooperation to other irrigation districts and to the improvement of income from rice cultivation in priority and target irrigation districts.
