On December 2, JAL held a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its Narita-San Diego route.
The company’s San Diego route opened on December 2, 2012. At the time, there were no direct flights from Japan or other Asian destinations, and the aircraft was a Boeing 787-8, which JAL had just begun to introduce that year.
Mr. Munekazu Tachibana, Executive Officer and General Manager of Flight Operations, who himself was a pilot until three years ago and has experience flying to San Diego, said, “San Diego is a wonderful destination on the West Coast of North America. The climate is comfortable, as is typical of the West Coast, and it is compact and good for sightseeing. It is also the setting for this year’s hit movie “Top Gun: Maverick,” has great food, and is a modern business area. I am happy to have been able to fly to such a city for the past 10 years. I hope to continue to cherish this route in the future,” he explained.
Flight JL66 (departing Narita at 17:05 from San Diego at 09:45), which was the subject of the ceremony, had a high occupancy rate of 166 passengers (186 seats), 70% of whom were foreign travelers. The flight blocked out at 17:14, took off at 17:34, and flew to San Diego.
