Background and Objectives

The JICA Chair (JICA Support Program for Establishment of Japanese Studies Chair) supports the establishment of Japanese studies chairs at top universities in developing countries to provide opportunities to learn about Japan’s development experience in those countries. In Indonesia, the JICA Chair has been established in collaboration with the Nippon Foundation’s book donation project at the University of Indonesia as a partner university. In 2021, a special lecture by a JICA lecturer and a long-term series of JICA Chair lectures were held in Indonesia, with the JICA Chair credited as a regular lecture at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Indonesia.

On November 22, 2022, a special lecture (online) entitled “Holistic Education in Japanese Schools: Intellectual Education, Moral Education, and Physical Education” was held at the University of Indonesia by Dr. Nobuko Kayashima, Advisor to Sadako Ogata Peace and Development Institute, and together with many photos, she explained about holistic education in Japanese schools from various perspectives including the changes in the Courses of Study after the war, the role of teachers in education The lecture explained the general education in Japanese schools from various perspectives, including the changes in the Courses of Study after World War II, the role of teachers in the field, and the school life of students, along with many photos. The lecture was attended by nearly 200 participants, who asked numerous questions on such topics as how to evaluate students in elementary schools, how to deal with students with disabilities, how to deal with foreign students, how to deal with bullying, how teachers’ work ethic is maintained, and whether or not one teacher should be teaching all subjects. The participants asked many questions about how to deal with students with disabilities, how to deal with bullying, how to keep teachers motivated, and whether one teacher should teach all subjects.

We plan to coordinate with the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Indonesia to offer the JICA Chair Long-term Lecture Series (2nd lecture), which will receive credit as a regular lecture in the second semester of the program starting in February 2023.
