Weathernews announced snowfall trends for this winter.
Snowfall amounts this winter are expected to be normal or above normal on the Sea of Japan side of northern to western Japan. On the other hand, it is expected to be near normal from northern to western Japan on the Pacific side of the country. Due to the La Niña phenomenon, westerly winds will meander southward near Japan, and cold air will tend to flow into western Japan at times.
Snow is expected to peak in the second half of January over a wide area, with heavy snowfall in various parts of the Sea of Japan side, and a risk of accumulation in the Nobi Plain, Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe, and the Seto Inland Sea.
Last winter, some areas experienced record-breaking snowfall due to intermittent strong cold air flow from late December onward. In addition, northern Japan was susceptible to the influence of low-pressure systems at times, resulting in higher-than-normal total snowfall from December to February in northern Japan and the Sea of Japan side of western Japan, as well as in the Sea of Japan side of eastern Japan, although within the normal range. This year, for the third consecutive season, La Niña conditions have been observed in winter, and there is a possibility that snowfall will be as heavy as last winter.
