Signing of Minutes of Discussion on Technical Cooperation Project for Turkey: Supporting Urban Resilience in Turkey through Cooperation in the Field of Disaster Prevention

Posted on November 20, 2022 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will launch three technical cooperation projects in the field of disaster prevention in the Republic of Turkey.

On November 18, 2022, JICA and the Government of Turkey signed the Record of Discussions (R/D) for the technical cooperation project “Seismic Risk Reduction and Disaster Management Planning Project in Metropolitan Bursa” (the “Project”). This project aims to establish a system to promote proactive investment in disaster prevention in the Bursa Metropolitan Area by promoting understanding of disaster risk assessment and developing an effective urban resilience plan from the perspective of disaster prevention.

Prior to this, on November 9, the R/D was signed for a technical cooperation project, “Capacity Improvement of Local Governments for Waste and Pollution Management and Disaster Risk Management Project,” which provides support to local governments to improve their capacity to formulate and implement disaster prevention and environmental management plans and projects.

In addition, in December, we will sign the R/D for the Science and Technology Cooperation Project (SATREPS), “Establishment of a Research and Education Complex in Turkey for Developing a Disaster Resilient Society – Maltest”, which aims to improve science and technology for disaster reduction and disaster literacy.

All of these projects will contribute to SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Goal 11 (to create cities that are livable). While it is difficult to accurately predict the timing and magnitude of disasters, it is important to understand disaster risks and reduce them in advance as much as scientifically possible in order to limit the damage caused by disasters.

Since the 1990s, JICA has contributed to disaster risk reduction in Turkey through a wide range of cooperation in earthquake and seismic engineering, earthquake observation technology, disaster prevention planning, and disaster prevention education. Building on these past cooperative achievements, JICA will continue to contribute to the resilience of Turkish cities by cooperating in strengthening the administrative functions of disaster management and promoting investment in disaster prevention in advance.

Details of this project are as follows
