The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of Saint Lucia on November 10 in the capital city of Castries for a grant of up to 1,263 million yen for the “Shosair Fishing Port Improvement Project.
The fishing industry is one of the most important industries in the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia. Japan has long cooperated in the development of the country’s fisheries industry, and the Shosair Fishing Port in the southwestern part of the country was constructed in 2001 with Japanese grant aid, and has been used as the country’s main fishing port. However, sand deposits at the port entrance and inside the port have been hindering the entry, mooring, and unloading of fishing vessels.
This project aims to improve the efficiency of use of the fishing port by improving facilities such as sand embankments to reduce sedimentation. This project will contribute to the promotion of the fishing industry in Saint Lucia, a small island nation, and help achieve Goal 1 (Eliminate poverty), Goal 2 (Food security), and Goal 14 (Protect the richness of the sea) of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
