JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi at JICA headquarters on November 7.
They confirmed that partnerships between humanitarian and development cooperation organizations are more important than ever as humanitarian crises become increasingly complex and prolonged in many parts of the world, and exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in various countries and regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. The participants also agreed to continue discussions on expanding cooperation in the field of education, taking into account the results of the “Syrian Bridge to Peace/Human Resources Development Program,” which provides young Syrian refugees deprived of schooling opportunities due to the Syrian crisis with the opportunity to study at graduate schools in Japan.
Mr. Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, introduced the importance of the 2nd Global Refugee Forum (GRF) scheduled to be held in Geneva in December 2023, and both parties confirmed that they will work closely together to prepare for the joint dissemination and other activities at this meeting.
JICA will continue to cooperate with UNHCR and contribute to solving refugee problems through humanitarian and development partnerships.
