Emergency Relief Aid for Drought Damage in Tuvalu -Delivery of Donated Goods

Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for drought damage in Tuvalu have been delivered to the country.

The emergency relief supplies for Tuvalu arrived in the capital city of Funafuti on November 5, 2011, via a Royal Australian Air Force aircraft, and were handed over at 14:30 (local time) on November 9, 2011, in the presence of Mr. Sumeo Shiru, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Public Works, Infrastructure, Environment, Labour, Weather and Disaster, from Tuvalu, Ambassador Fumihiro Kawakami, Ambassador of Japan to Fiji Ambassador of Japan to Fiji Mr. Fumihiro Kawakami, Ms. Mayumi Amaike, Director of JICA Fiji Office, and Ms. Robin McKenzie, High Commissioner of the Australian High Commission in Tuvalu, attended the ceremony and conducted the delivery ceremony online.

At the handover ceremony, Mr. Sumeo expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s assistance and stated that the supplies that had arrived would be distributed to areas in need as soon as possible due to the drought emergency declared the previous day. In response, Ambassador Kawakami expressed his hope that the damage caused by the drought would be alleviated as soon as possible. Mr. Amaike also expressed his hope that the relief supplies would help alleviate the difficulties faced by the victims.

The High Commissioner also noted that the transport of the supplies was carried out in cooperation with the Australian government, and High Commissioner Mackenzie said that the close cooperation between Australia and Japan in providing assistance to Tuvalu in response to the drought was a great achievement.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
