The Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, Kagoshima Bank, Kagoshima Card, Nimoca, QUADRAC, Visa Worldwide Japan, JCB, Odawara Kiki, and Iura Shokai will conduct a demonstration experiment using Visa-branded touch payment on Kagoshima city streetcars operated by the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau from November 1 to The experiment will be conducted from November 1 to September 30, 2023.
JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, Diners, and Discover plan to start demonstration testing after April 2023.
International-brand touch-settlement terminals have been installed in 25 of Kagoshima’s streetcars, about half of the total number of streetcars in the city. By holding a touch-sensitive card or smartphone over the terminal, passengers can board the tram without having to purchase or recharge the card in advance.
