Signing of Minutes of Discussion on Technical Cooperation Project for Laos: Contributing to the Sustainable Development of the World Heritage City of Luang Prabang through the Improvement of Urban Transport

Posted on October 25, 2022 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) on October 24 in Vientiane for the technical cooperation project “Sustainable Urban Development and Transportation Management Project in Luang Prabang. The project is a technical cooperation project.

The ancient capital of Luang Prabang, located in northern Laos, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the leading tourist destinations in Laos. The city has grown remarkably in recent years, and the surrounding environment has changed dramatically due to population growth and the expansion of the transportation network, including railroads and roads. It is expected that both human and traffic flows will continue to increase significantly in the future, but at present, the impact of these changes has not been fully considered, and no long-term vision or plan has been established.

In light of this situation, this project will strengthen the planning and project implementation capacity of government agencies involved in urban transportation in the said World Heritage Area and surrounding areas.

Through this project, we will contribute to the realization of a transportation project that will help Luang Prabang develop as a sustainable tourist city and contribute to SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Goal 11 (to create a city where people can continue to live).

The details of the project are as follows
