Autumn is in full swing, and the perfect holiday season has arrived. In this series of articles, we will pick up new and classic confections from among various famous confections found at places to go throughout Japan. This time, we will introduce two products loved by men and women of all ages from Hiroshima Prefecture, where the autumn leaves of the Sankeien Garden and Teishakyo Gorge are beautiful.

Among the many stores, Fujiiya is one of the most popular, with its main store located on the main approach to Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site. Since its establishment in 1925, the traditional “momiji manju” has been made with carefully selected Hokkaido azuki beans, which are peeled and cooked to a “wisteria-colored koshi-an” (sweet reddish-brown bean paste). The sponge cake that envelops the sweet bean paste is made with fresh eggs from local farms and baked by artisans to a fluffy texture with just the right amount of heat.

In addition to Koshi An (sweet red bean paste), there are other flavors such as Tsubuan An (sweet red bean paste), Matcha An (green tea bean paste), Western-style custard cream, and chocolate. These are perfect as tea cakes.
