Project to Improve Waste Management Capacity for a Recycling-Oriented Society Phase 2

Posted on September 29, 2022 by News Admin

In Kosovo, waste has been increasing as a result of reconstruction from the conflict and increased economic activity due to the stabilization of the country. However, due to the aging of waste collection vehicles and the limited personnel and budget of the government agencies responsible for waste management, waste collection and transportation is not being carried out adequately, and in areas where collection services do not reach, inappropriate disposal such as illegal dumping is a problem. In areas where collection services are not available, improper disposal, such as illegal dumping, has become a problem. Under these circumstances, through a technical cooperation project and grant assistance (provision of 43 refuse collection vehicles to 6 municipalities) in Prizren, the second largest city in Kosovo, Japan has cooperated in strengthening waste management organizations, improving waste collection, formulating a 5-year waste management plan, and reviewing refuse fees and collection methods. As a result, the company has been able to provide waste collection services. As a result, financial stabilization was achieved by expanding the areas served by waste collection services and increasing fee revenues. In the future, the sustainable waste management model established in Prizren is to be used in four small and medium-sized municipalities (Malisheva, Suhareka, Dragash, and Mahovets) in the vicinity of Prizren, and further spread nationwide. This cooperation will improve waste collection and transportation services in the four target municipalities based on the specific challenges of each municipality and improve the waste management capacity of each municipality, thereby contributing to the development of a waste management model that can be used by small and medium-sized local governments in Kosovo.
