Malawi’s electrification rate of 11 percent is extremely low compared to the sub-Saharan African average of 35 percent (Population and Housing Census, 2018), and peak electricity demand exceeds installed generation capacity, making the expansion of generation capacity a top priority The priority is to increase power generation capacity. In terms of transmission and substation facilities, many substations have already reached their capacity limits and are aging rapidly, and it is anticipated that the transmission and distribution facilities will not be able to handle future increases in electricity supply. In particular, at the Kanengo and Old Town substations near the capital city of Lilongwe, problems due to aging facilities have led to an increase in the number of power outages, accumulated dissatisfaction among residents, a sharp increase in operation and maintenance costs, and increased economic losses due to power supply restrictions in the industrial concentration areas. This cooperation will be implemented in Lilongwe, the capital city of Lilongwe. This cooperation aims to improve the power supply to industrial clusters and the city center by upgrading the substations in Kanengo and Old Town in the capital city of Lilongwe, thereby contributing to the revitalization of various industries, the attraction of foreign companies, and the improvement of the lives of citizens.
