JAL resumes Hawaii/Kona route after 2 years and 4 months. Special summer fares that can still be purchased.

Posted on August 3, 2022 by News Admin

JAL resumed its Narita – Kona, Hawaii route on August 2. The route has been suspended since March 24, 2020, when flights JL770/779 were cancelled due to the Korona disaster.

JAL’s Narita – Kona route (August 2 – September 30, 2022)

JL770: Departs Narita (22:00) – Kona (10:50), Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

JL779: Departs Kona (12:50) – Narita (16:35), Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday

JAL has been operating daily flights on the Honolulu-Hawaii route since June, with extra flights in August and September; as of August, there are two flights a day on the Haneda-Honolulu route, one flight a day plus extra flights on the Narita-Honolulu route, approximately three flights a week on the Kansai International Airport-Honolulu route, and approximately two flights a week on the Centrair-Honolulu route, and the Kona route is being added to this service. ZIPAIR, a wholly owned subsidiary of JAL Group, has been operating a daily Narita-Honolulu route since July 16, which means that the two airlines together offer up to six flights a day to Hawaii.

The reservation rate for the entire month of August is close to 80%, and some flights are already fully booked on certain days. In addition, travel costs tend to be higher this summer due to the soaring fuel surcharges, the rising cost of accommodations in the Hawaiian islands, and the need for PCR inspections before returning to Japan.

JAL, on the other hand, has special fares starting at 55,000 yen round-trip to Honolulu and 89,000 yen round-trip to Kona (fuel and other fees not included). Depending on the date combination, both Honolulu and Kona can still be booked at these prices, so if you are considering a summer trip to Hawaii, please check JAL’s website.

The aircraft used on the Kona route is a Boeing 767 with international specifications, and the first resumed flight carried 164 passengers (24 in business class and 140 in economy class, plus 2 infants).
