Posted on July 30, 2022 by News Admin

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited the People’s Republic of Bangladesh from July 21 to 25. During his stay, he attended a memorial service for the seven people who lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Dhaka in July 2016 (engaged in the preparatory survey for cooperation in the Dhaka Urban Transport Improvement Project conducted by JICA) and met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Momen, and Finance Minister Kamal. They also visited Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar to inspect cooperation project sites and Rohingya refugee camps. In his remarks at the ceremony, President Tanaka expressed his gratitude for the contributions of the seven individuals to the development of Bangladesh, and pledged never to forget their legacy and to take all possible measures to ensure safety. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Khadeer, Minister of Road Transport and Bridges.

In meetings with Foreign Minister Momen and Finance Minister Kamal, we reviewed JICA’s cooperation to date and discussed efforts to further accelerate economic growth, promote investment for industrial diversification, and overcome social vulnerabilities.

In Cox’s Bazar, they visited a Rohingya refugee camp and inspected an e-voucher system using blockchain established by the World Food Program (WFP) and water supply facilities developed by JICA in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). JICA is also cooperating in the construction of a county hospital and accommodations for medical personnel to be used by both host communities and displaced people, and JICA attended the handover ceremony of the accommodations. In addition, they visited the site of cooperative projects in the Moheshkhali Matabari region and confirmed the remarkable development of the region.
