In urban areas of Bangladesh, buildings are rapidly rising in height and density due to rapid economic development in recent years. One example is the 2013 Dhaka suburban building collapse (Rana Plaza collapse), in which more than 1,130 people were killed in a tenant building housing a sewing factory due to illegal construction and illegal buildup. Although various measures have been taken in response to this accident, there are still many cases where buildings are not designed and constructed in accordance with building standards, and there is an urgent need to ensure the quality of building design and construction in compliance with building standards, so that people can engage in economic activities and live in a safe and healthy manner. This cooperation will support the Metropolitan Development Corporation, which is in charge of building administration for private buildings in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area, to establish a building design review process, improve the inspection and supervision system, raise awareness of stakeholders such as clients and contractors, and develop the human resources necessary for these activities. By helping to improve the quality of design and construction of new private-sector buildings, we will contribute to reducing the risk of building disasters in urban areas of the country.
