Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will start an initiative to recycle the waste material from the manufacturing process of composite main wings for the Boeing 787 aircraft into home appliance parts.
Carbon fiber composite materials generated during the production of the main wings are recycled and reused as pipe and handle parts for Mitsubishi Electric’s iNSTICK ZUBAQ cordless vacuum cleaner series. The company aims to reduce environmental impact and contribute to global environmental protection through effective use of resources.
While carbon fiber composite materials are increasingly being used in the wings of passenger aircraft due to their lightweight and high-strength characteristics, the large energy load during carbon fiber production results in a large amount of CO2 emissions. In addition, the environmental impact of the disposal process is also a major issue. In response, we have been working to establish a supply chain that can provide a stable supply of recycled materials and to overcome the technical challenges unique to recycled materials.
The materials recycled from the process waste of composite main wings for the 787 will be reused in various applications, including new products in the iNSTICK ZUBAQ series to be released by Mitsubishi Electric in the future.
