In Bangladesh, demand for electricity was increasing in line with robust economic growth, but power generation capacity was not keeping pace with this growth in demand. Therefore, the government of Bangladesh had set a national goal of “providing a stable supply of affordable electricity to all citizens by 2020,” and was working on capital investment. However, the construction of new power plants was not progressing as planned, and the aging of power plants in operation was leading to plans for their closure, which was expected to widen the supply-demand gap. Furthermore, in order to close the supply-demand gap and achieve a stable supply of electricity, in addition to developing new power sources, a major challenge was to improve the efficiency of the sector as a whole by increasing the operating rates of power plants and improving system losses. In this cooperation, the construction of a new thermal power plant in the Haripur district of Narayanganj and support for strengthening and improving the efficiency of the power plant’s overall operating system helped to meet the growing demand for electricity, thereby contributing to the enhancement of industrial competitiveness and the improvement of civilian life.
