Atiak-Nimule road project

Posted on June 20, 2022 by News Admin

Uganda’s Amuru District is located approximately 350 km northwest of the capital Kampala and borders South Sudan. The region has lagged behind in the development of production, livelihood, and social infrastructure due to years of civil war. South Sudan is rich in mineral resources such as crude oil and fertile arable land, but its landlocked location has become a logistics bottleneck, and high transportation costs have hindered economic growth. Against this background, it was extremely important to secure transportation routes from Kampala to Juba in Southern Sudan and from the port of Mombasa in Kenya to Juba via Gulu, the central city of Northern Uganda, for the economic development and poverty reduction of the region, with a view not only to the growth of Northern Uganda, but also Southern Sudan. The project was a major step forward for the region’s economic development and poverty alleviation.

In this cooperation, the existing road from Atiak to Nimule, on the border with South Sudan, was rehabilitated in the northern region of Uganda to increase transportation capacity in the target area, promoting economic integration with neighboring countries, revitalizing the economy, and improving the livelihoods of the people living along the road and reducing poverty.
