Contributing to improving the quality of maternal and child health care services in Ghana

Posted on June 10, 2022 by News Admin

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Ghana on June 8 in Accra for a grant of up to 2.455 billion yen for the “Health and Medical System Improvement Project in the Northern Region.

Although Ghana is working to improve access to healthcare services, the maternal mortality rate, under-five mortality rate, and in-facility maternal mortality rate are still high in the Northern Region, the target area of this project. In addition, the Tamale Central Hospital, which is positioned as the state hospital, has wards that are more than 90 years old, making it difficult to provide the maternal and child health care services that are currently required due to its aging.

This project will improve the quality of maternal and child health care services and the referral system in the Northern Province by rebuilding and expanding the Tamale Central Hospital and equipping it with medical equipment, as well as equipping county hospitals in the province with medical equipment that makes emergency transport to a superior hospital difficult, thereby contributing to improving the health status of mothers and children in the region. The project will contribute to Goal 3 (health and well-being for all) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The details of the project are as follows
