Lake Nishi-no-ko (Nikko), which I will introduce here, is my favorite lake located west of Lake Chuzenji in Oku-Nikko.
Lake Nishi-no-ko was once part of Lake Chuzenji, but has since been separated from it. It is registered under the Ramsar Convention as part of the Oku-Nikko wetlands, and is a good place to immerse oneself in nature, as its flora and fauna are under strict protection.
This is a place that holds deep memories for me, as it was the last place I walked with my father, who used to take me around the mountains of Nikko when I was a child, in his later years. This photo is a little old, but I visited there at the end of May, when the late spring greenery had begun. We left the car at a parking lot just before Senjogahara (Senjogahara Plain) after passing Chuzenji-ko (Lake Chuzenji) and walked for two hours while viewing Odashirogahara (Odashirogahara Plain).
If walking is difficult for you, you can take a low-pollution bus to Chitegahama (Lake Chuzenji). If you take a sightseeing boat from Lake Chuzenji to Chitegahama near Lake Nishi-no-ko, you can easily reach the beach in 30 minutes. It is a wonderful place to discover something new by changing the course each time you visit. I am planning to visit again during the season of autumn leaves.
