Participating in the Completion Ceremony of the Nile Bridge Reaffirms Importance of Peace and Stability On May 19, President Tanaka attended the completion ceremony of the “Nile Bridge Construction Project,” a Japanese grant aid. The construction of the Nile Bridge, which began in 2013 just after independence, was completed over 10 years after overcoming two armed conflicts and a total of three construction stoppages due to the Corona disaster. The bridge is South Sudan’s first permanent bridge over the Nile River, and is expected to facilitate logistics connecting Kenya and Uganda with Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and contribute to peace, stability, and economic development in the country. In his speech at the completion ceremony, President Tanaka mentioned the significance of the bridge as (1) contribution to logistics and economic development, (2) nation building through human resource development, and (3) symbol of freedom and peace. Mr. Tanaka also met with Mr. Mijok, Minister of Roads and Bridges, and Mr. Kuren, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to South Sudan, and promised to promote future cooperation with South Sudan, and expressed his hope for a strong initiative by the Government of South Sudan for peace and development.
