Digital TV Broadcasting Transition Project in Angola

Posted on May 23, 2022 by News Admin

In Angola, television broadcasting is provided by four national and private broadcasters, with a coverage rate of approximately 60% (in 2019), and is a popular source of information for citizens. However, improving access to information remains a challenge, as private broadcasters do not cover some rural areas. In addition, approximately 70% of the population speaks a local language other than the official language (Portuguese), and there is a high need for subtitling and multilingual broadcasting. Furthermore, in anticipation of natural disasters, etc., there is a need to provide information in a quick and simple manner.

Therefore, the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting, which enables the provision of diverse information compared to conventional analog broadcasting, has become an important theme in the information and communications domain. The country adopted the Japanese terrestrial digital broadcasting system in 2011, but later switched to the European system, and then adopted the Japanese system again in 2019, and now needs to update its master plan.

This cooperation will contribute to the transition to digital terrestrial television broadcasting in the country by updating the Digital Terrestrial Television Transition Master Plan.
