The City of Kyoto is pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of its research bulletin, “Motorikyu Nijo Castle,” as follows.

The purpose of this booklet is to disseminate the results of surveys and research on the history and culture of Kyoto, centering on Nijo Castle, from its construction by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 to the present day, as well as records related to cultural properties. This booklet consists of historical reprints and research notes, introductions to artworks and materials, reports on the activities of the exhibition and collection center, and reports on research activities.


The first issue contains the Early Modern period (Keicho period to Bunkyu period) of a selection of important literary materials essential for understanding Nijo Castle, which will be published as the “Compiled Historiography of Nijo Castle, Motorikyu. The research notes focus on the relationship between Nijo Castle and the Daiman (Nijo zaiban), the leading group of shogunate officials who made Nijo Castle their residence for a long period of time during the Edo period, and the Kyoto Tokushidai. The introduction to the works describes the Meiji Period barrier paintings of Ninomaru Palace, and the introduction to the materials describes the report on the restoration of the barrier paintings in 1949.
