Chancellor Tanaka and Special Advisor Kitaoka meet with Philippine Finance Minister Dominguez

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka and JICA Special Advisor Shinichi Kitaoka (former President) met with Carlos Dominguez, Minister of Finance of the Republic of the Philippines, at JICA Headquarters on April 25.


At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Dominguez expressed his gratitude to Special Advisor Kitaoka for his long service as JICA President and for JICA’s cooperation in the Philippines to date, and expressed his hope for continued cooperation with JICA President Tanaka. He also expressed his appreciation for JICA’s efforts to develop not only economic and technical aspects, but also comprehensive projects, including support for peace in Mindanao.


In response, Special Advisor Kitaoka expressed his respect for Minister Dominguez’s leadership and efforts in promoting economic policies and measures, particularly infrastructure development projects, in the six years since his arrival, and expressed his welcome to the Minister’s visit, noting the trust that has deepened between Japan and the Philippines.


President Tanaka mentioned JICA’s cooperation projects focusing on “quality infrastructure” and support for Mindanao, JICA’s cooperation in combating new coronavirus infection, and expressed his desire to continue close collaboration with the new Philippine administration after the presidential election, including cooperation in the field of disaster prevention based on the importance of climate change measures. He also expressed his wish to continue close cooperation with the new Philippine administration after the presidential election. At the same time, President Tanaka stressed the importance of maritime security cooperation in the Philippines.


Following the meeting, President Tanaka and Minister Dominguez signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) for up to 30 billion yen for the “Emergency Assistance Loan for New Coronavirus Disease Crisis Response (Phase 2)”.


JICA will continue to contribute to the sustainable development of the Philippines through socio-economic development including infrastructure development, human resource development, and technical cooperation.
