Western Region Sewage Development Project

Posted on May 10, 2022 by News Admin

Fiji currently has 11 sewage treatment plants (4 in the western region and 7 in the eastern region, including the capital city of Suva).
Lautoka and Nadi, the second and third most populous cities in Fiji, are located in the Western Region (Ba, Nandroga Navosa, and La Provinces), and are centers of the sugar and manufacturing industries, as well as important centers of the tourism industry with the Nadi International Airport. However, sewage treatment has not been able to keep pace with population and tourist growth, and there are concerns about the negative impact on the environment. In anticipation of future increases in demand due to population and economic growth, it is necessary to develop sewage treatment facilities and equipment, and to conduct comprehensive studies on appropriate collective and decentralized sewage treatment in urban and rural areas.
This cooperation will be implemented in the Western Region by working with the Fiji Water Authority (WAF) to develop a master plan for sewage treatment (including on-site treatment) for the entire Western Region, master plans for sewerage systems in priority cities, and pre-feasibility studies for priority projects, thereby improving human resources and operational management capacity for sewage treatment. By improving the capacity and strengthening the project implementation system for sewage treatment projects, the implementation of functional improvement and expansion projects for sewage treatment facilities in the western region will be promoted, contributing to the improvement of the urban and sanitation environment and water environment in the western region.
