Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, met with Wesley W. Shimina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, in Tokyo on October 22.
At the outset, Chairman Tanaka expressed his congratulations on the 40th anniversary of the Federation of Micronesia’s independence and conveyed his gratitude for the Micronesian government’s understanding and cooperation regarding JICA projects.
In response, President Shimina expressed his gratitude for JICA’s long-standing cooperation and highly commended JICA for advancing its assistance with a deep understanding of the country’s circumstances, with the aim of improving “connectivity” between islands—a priority for the government.
The two sides also exchanged views on potential areas of cooperation, including the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11) to be held in Japan next year, the ongoing Port of Pohnpei expansion project, and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia in 2028.
