[JAL Hometown Ambassadors/Support Team: A Look at Their Love for Their Regions] Enjoy an Autumn of Art and Food! Introducing the Ueno-yaki Autumn Pottery Festival and Sweets Tea Party

Posted on October 23, 2026 by Editor in Chief

JAL, which has bases throughout the country, has been continuously implementing initiatives to revitalize local communities (currently known as the “JAL Hometown Project”), and In August 2020, the company launched the “JAL Hometown Ambassadors” program, in which flight attendants selected through an internal application process relocate to local communities to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, it also appointed the “JAL Hometown Support Team,” whose members engage in regional revitalization efforts while continuing to fly. The aim is to utilize the expertise cabin crew members have cultivated in their roles to develop products and address regional challenges in their hometowns or areas with which they have ties.

We spoke with Tomoko Kuga, a JAL Hometown Ambassador based in Fukuoka who is involved in promoting Ueno-yaki.

――Please tell us about your efforts.

Hello, everyone! I’m Kuga, a JAL Hometown Ambassador from Fukuoka Prefecture. It’s that time of year when we can feel the crisp autumn breeze.

In this update, we’d like to share with you our current initiatives and some special announcements.

Currently, I am engaged in public relations activities aimed at raising awareness of “Agano-yaki,” a nationally designated traditional craft from Fukuchi Town in Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture, which boasts a history of over 400 years. The main appeal of Agano-yaki lies in its rich colors, created by a variety of glazes, as well as its light weight, comfortable feel in the hand, and ease of use.

――How are you involved in this initiative?

To truly experience the charm of Ueno-yaki firsthand, I visited a pottery studio and tried my hand at pottery! This time, under the guidance of Mr. Sakai of “Shoryu-gama,” I took on the challenge of making a lampshade. Focusing on the delicate work sharpened my senses, and I spent a truly fulfilling time.

I have the finished piece displayed in my bedroom at home, and it brings me comfort every day.

To share the appeal we’ve discovered in this way, we’re conducting promotional activities at various events and elsewhere. As part of these efforts, and due to its popularity, we’ve decided to release the third installment of our collaborative product with JAL, “SORAnoWA.”

The theme for this collection is “Miraculous Scenery.” We designed these plates with the hope that, just as those who have encountered such rare and miraculous scenery feel a sense of happiness, you, too, will feel that same joy when you hold one in your hands (4 designs; set of 2 per box). Featuring designs unique to our JAL collaboration—such as airplanes and cranes—these plates are perfect not only as a treat for yourself but also as a gift for someone special.

――Please tell us about your future plans and outlook.

Here are two fall events where you can fully experience the charm of Ueno-yaki!
