Signing of a Grant Agreement for Grant Aid to Papua New Guinea: Contributing to the Strengthening of Logistics Infrastructure Through Landslide Mitigation Measures on the Kokopo-Rabaul Trunk Road | News & Public Relations

Posted on September 27, 2026 by Editor in Chief

On September 18, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement (Grant Agreement: G/A) with the Government of Papua New Guinea for the “Cocopo-Rabaul Coastal Trunk Road Landslide Mitigation Plan.” The agreement was signed that day by Connie Samuel, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of National Planning and Monitoring of Papua New Guinea, and Kenichi Shiramizu, Director of the JICA Papua New Guinea Office.

Scenes from the signing ceremony

This project aims to improve the reliability of road infrastructure and strengthen the logistics framework by implementing measures to prevent soil erosion along sections identified as priority projects in the infrastructure development plan that Japan helped draft. It will contribute to the economic revitalization of Papua New Guinea and to “enhancing connectivity,” a key priority of the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” initiative. Furthermore, by leveraging Japan’s experience and technology in the fields of disaster prevention and sediment-related disaster response to address the increasing risks of natural disasters caused by climate change, the project is expected to strengthen friendly relations between Japan and Papua New Guinea and contribute to the development of a resilient and sustainable infrastructure network in the Indo-Pacific region.
