Universal Studios Japan’s “Halloween Horror Nights” is celebrating its 15th anniversary and is returning this year with an even more immersive experience. One highlight not to be missed is the “Zombie Bar,” a first in the park’s history.
When night falls, the Wharf Café in the San Francisco area transforms into a zombie hangout. Starting at 6:00 p.m., you can enjoy drinks inspired by zombies from past Halloween Horror Nights.
Do even zombies want to be cute? Starting with “Cute Zombie’s Sweet Temptation ~Strawberry Milk~” (750 yen), which embodies that girly zombie spirit, the lineup includes “Circus Zombie’s Madness ~Lychee Non-Alcoholic Sour~” (800 yen), “Chainsaw Zombie’s Rampage ~Blood Orange & Lemon Sour~” (900 yen), and more—the lineup ranges from non-alcoholic to alcoholic drinks. The very idea of zombies making cocktails is a new experience that epitomizes this year’s nightlife.
Another highlight you won’t want to miss is the “School Festival Food,” featuring items tied to this year’s new attractions, “Halloween Horror Night Academy: 15 Years of Screams” and “Street Zombies.” This year’s theme revolves around high school students visiting USJ on a school trip who are infected one after another by a mysterious force and turn into zombies. But even as zombies, they’re still high school students—and for some reason, they’ve decided to hold a school festival right inside the park.
The “#DecoChampionship Zombie Cheerleading Club’s Cassis Waffle” (800 yen), inspired by the Zombie Cheerleading Club; the Zombie Science Club’s “Burst! Zombie Science Club’s Experimental Takoyaki—Served with UMAMI Garlic Oil” (800 yen); and the Zombie American Football Club’s “Muscle Rampage! Zombie American Football Club’s Cheese & Beef Short Rib Rice Dog” (1,200 yen)—food items with playful names like these are sure to liven up the school festival atmosphere.
By the way, “Zombie Banana Ice Cream ~Does a Banana Count as a Snack?~” (500 yen), which features the same theme, is available exclusively in the evenings at the Zombie Bar.
In addition, new items from “Resident Evil: Requiem” include the “Green Herb Recovery Croissant Dog—Basil Sauce & Chicken” (1,000 yen) and “Leon S. Kennedy’s Bitter Chocolate Churitos” (850 yen). In the game world, “Green Herb” refers to a healing item. Be sure to grab one if you get tired at the park. Available at the food cart in front of Space Fantasy: The Ride.
There are some new additions to the restaurant menu as well. At Studio Stars Restaurant, there are a variety of character-themed plates with fun Halloween-themed presentations—you’re sure to have a hard time choosing.
The “Cocoa-Scented Bacon Cutlet Burger Plate (2,600 yen),” with all sorts of goodies spilling out of Hamikuma’s belly, and the colorful, playful “Hamikuma Candy Family Berry Cake (1,000 yen).”
No matter how hard you try, My Melody’s “Roast Beef Croissant Sandwich Plate” (2,600 yen) never looks scary, while the slightly dark-themed Eye-Patch Kitty’s “Hello Kitty Apple Cheesecake” (1,000 yen), plus Peanuts’ “Mushroom Cream Sauce Hamburger Steak & Omelet Rice Plate (2,600 yen)—which, once again, leaves me with no other reaction than ‘cute’—and Snoopy’s “Purple Sweet Potato Mont Blanc (1,000 yen),” which is several times bluer than I expected.”
Since the plate has a variety of items on it, it’s nice that just one plate is enough to leave you feeling satisfied.
Add a dash of “horror”—exclusive to this year—to your usual park experience of eating and drinking. Once you’ve been overrun by zombies at the rides and clinked glasses with them at the Zombie Bar, you’re sure to become one of the residents of that world. I can’t wait to enjoy a night like that.
