JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing initiatives to revitalize local communities (currently known as the “JAL Hometown Project”), and In August 2020, the company launched the “JAL Hometown Ambassadors” program, in which flight attendants selected through an internal application process relocate to local communities to promote initiatives in their respective regions. Additionally, in December of the same year, the company appointed the “JAL Hometown Support Team,” whose members engage in regional revitalization efforts while continuing their flight duties. The aim is to utilize the expertise cabin crew members have cultivated in their roles to develop products and address regional challenges in their hometowns or areas with which they have ties.
We spoke with Mai Saito, a JAL Hometown Ambassador involved in the “SL Winter Wetlands” tour in Hokkaido.
――Please tell us about your efforts.
The “SL Winter Wetlands” is a winter-only sightseeing train in eastern Hokkaido, where a traditional steam locomotive powerfully races through snow-covered wetlands and the crisp winter air. JR Hokkaido operates this train between Kushiro and Shibecha on the Senmo Main Line only during a limited period each year, from late January to early March.
One of the major attractions is the opportunity to spot wildlife unique to winter from the train window. From inside the train as it travels through the wetlands, you can see beautiful red-crowned cranes and Ezo deer up close, their figures standing out against the white railings.
The nostalgic, retro-style interior features a traditional “daruma stove.” One of the unique experiences you can enjoy on this train is warming yourself by the stove while toasting dried squid purchased from the onboard vendor, all while surrounded by its savory aroma.
――How are you involved in this initiative?
This winter, JAL Hometown Ambassadors (flight attendants) and the Eastern Hokkaido Support Team (Kushiro Airport ground staff) will once again be providing hospitality onboard. We have prepared a variety of special events to help our passengers discover even more of the charms of Eastern Hokkaido.
On the day of the event, we are preparing a program that will allow you to experience the unique charms of this region. This includes an original travel guide as a memento of your ride, a gift of tea and sweets from Eastern Hokkaido—perfect for your journey—and onboard announcements introducing the areas along the route.
――Please tell us about the events you plan to hold.
On the “SL Winter Wetlands Express,” JAL Hometown Ambassadors and the Eastern Hokkaido Support Group will be on board to welcome and entertain you for two days only on the dates listed below. We hope you’ll enjoy this unique travel experience available only on these two days.
