The name of the first Disney cruise ship to be launched from Japan has been set as the “Disney Imagination.” It is scheduled to begin service in fiscal year 2028.

Oriental Land Cruise has announced the names of the passenger ships to be used by Disney Cruise Line Japan, which are currently under construction with the aim of entering service in fiscal year 2028.

The ship’s name is “Disney Imagination.”

This cruise ship is the first Disney Cruise Line vessel to depart from Japan. With a gross tonnage of approximately 140,000 metric tons, it is set to be one of the largest ships registered in Japan. The ship is based on the “Disney Wish,” which entered service in 2022, with some modifications made specifically for the Japanese market.

Approximately 1,250 guest cabins. Passenger capacity is approximately 4,000. The crew consists of approximately 1,500 members. The investment amounts to 290 billion yen for the hull and 40 billion yen for contingencies (based on exchange rates of 165 yen per euro and 155 yen per dollar). The ship is scheduled to begin service in fiscal year 2028 and is expected to operate year-round by fiscal year 2029.

On deck and throughout the ship, guests can enjoy activities and entertainment unique to Disney. A variety of cabin grades and types, as well as a wide range of dining options, are available.

According to the current service plan, cruises will depart from and return to the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal, with voyages expected to last approximately 2 to 4 days. Prices for the most common cabin type are projected to range from 100,000 to 300,000 yen per person per voyage. The target audience includes families, young adults, and international tourists visiting Japan.

The company is pooling the knowledge and experience it has accumulated through the operation of Tokyo Disney Resort. It aims to establish a new revenue pillar for the Oriental Land Group. The company cites benefits such as mitigating the risk of over-concentration in Maihama, scalability that is not constrained by land limitations, and a highly profitable business model.

A few years after the service launches, the company aims to achieve annual revenue of approximately 100 billion yen and an annual passenger count of about 400,000. It expects to turn a profit starting in fiscal year 2029, when the service will operate year-round. Furthermore, the company states that it will consider launching a second vessel after ensuring the steady success of the first one.
