Seven railway companies, including JR East, will transition to “QR tickets” starting in the spring of 2027. Passengers will tap their tickets on the ticket gates to enter and place them in a collection box upon exiting.

Keisei Electric Railway, Keihin Electric Express Railway, Sendai Airport Railway, Tokyo Monorail, Tobu Railway, JR East, and Hokuso Railway will change the way short-distance tickets (paper tickets) are used starting in the spring of 2027 and introduce QR-code-based tickets (QR tickets) on all lines and at all stations.

This initiative involves replacing current magnetic tickets with QR tickets, and we will promote it—along with ticketless services such as Suica and PASMO—as a sustainable railway service for the future.

With a few exceptions, QR tickets are large-size tickets (57.5 × 85 mm). The process involves holding a QR ticket purchased from a ticket vending machine up to an automatic ticket gate to enter the station, and then dropping it into the collection box installed at the automatic ticket gate when exiting the station (at some stations without QR-code-compatible automatic ticket gates, passengers must use a staffed ticket window).

Operators planning to launch QR ticket services in fiscal year 2027 or later will announce details as soon as they are finalized.
