Mount Fuji During the Closed Season: Disaster Relief Helicopter Rescue Services to Become Fee-Based; Fee Waivers Available with Submission of New Climbing Registration Form

On September 14, Yamanashi Prefecture released a report outlining measures to prevent reckless climbing on Mount Fuji during the closed season, including the introduction of fees for disaster relief helicopter rescues.

A new “Mt. Fuji Climbing Registration System (tentative name)” will be established, and the current system will be strengthened specifically for Mt. Fuji. Climbing registration forms will also be used as documentation for fee reductions or waivers in the event of a helicopter rescue.

In conjunction with this new mountain climbing registration system, disaster relief helicopter rescue services will generally be subject to a fee, with specific areas and time periods designated for the fee. Furthermore, eligibility for fee reductions or exemptions will be determined based on factors such as whether a climbing registration form was submitted, compliance with standards regarding equipment, plans, and insurance, and whether the climber’s actions align with the details provided in the registration.

In addition, to deter reckless climbing during the mountain closure period, measures such as the installation of new barricades and measures to prevent people from slipping through gaps will be implemented. Sensors, such as warning sirens and rotating lights, will be used to alert violators, and notices regarding penalties under the Road Act will also be posted.

These measures will be implemented as part of the “Package of Measures to Prevent Reckless Climbing During Mount Fuji’s Closed Season,” and the authorities plan to begin with the measures that are feasible while soliciting input from relevant organizations and other stakeholders.
