Chairman Tanaka Visits Peru | News & Public Relations

Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, visited Peru from September 7 to 12. During his visit, he held meetings with the President of Peru and other government officials, participated in ceremonies and lecture events, inspected JICA cooperation projects, and visited the Japanese-Peruvian Association. Through these activities, he reaffirmed the deep bonds between Peru and Japan and confirmed the impact of JICA’s cooperation to date, the need for support to expand that impact, and the expectations placed on Japan and JICA.

During his stay in Peru, he held meetings with high-ranking Peruvian government officials, including President Keiko Fujimori. During each meeting, discussions focused on the long-standing partnership between JICA and Peru, as well as the challenges facing the country and measures to address them. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of cooperation for Peru’s sustainable development and agreed to continue their dialogue and deepen their partnership moving forward.

In the state of Amazonas, we conducted site visits to project locations and interacted with local communities and other stakeholders. Through these activities, we observed examples of how various forms of JICA cooperation—including financial support for tourism infrastructure development, technical assistance utilizing Japan’s “ecomuseum” (open-air museum) approach, and the implementation of public lectures at universities to share Japan’s experiences—are contributing to sustainable, community-led tourism development in the region.

In addition, Chairman Tanaka attended the 150th anniversary commemorative event for the National University of Engineering of Peru (UNI). In his speech, he looked back on the 40-year history of the Japan-Peru Center for Earthquake Disaster Prevention (CISMID), which was established with Japan’s cooperation, and emphasized that disaster prevention cooperation is an effort to address natural disasters—a direct threat to human security. He also shared his vision for future cooperation in the fields of disaster prevention and science and technology, and expressed his expectations for the next generation of talent who will drive technological innovation and international cooperation.

During the visit to the Association of Japanese Descendants in Peru (APJ), we exchanged views with the association’s president. We expressed our respect for the association’s longstanding efforts to promote the development of the Japanese-Peruvian community and strengthen Japan-Peru relations, and conveyed our gratitude for its cooperation with JICA projects to date. We also confirmed our commitment to further developing our cooperation in supporting the Japanese-Peruvian community and in joint projects, with a focus on training programs.
