IDB Invest, utilizing the “Latin America and Caribbean Private Sector Development Trust Fund (commonly known as TADAC),” (Note) to sign a loan agreement on August 7 with the National University of Technology of Buenos Aires, located in Buenos Aires, the capital of the Argentine Republic, which produces some of the country’s top students in science and mathematics. In Argentina, the majority of higher education is provided by public universities; however, due to financial constraints and other factors, adequate infrastructure has not been established, and the country faces the challenge of low graduation rates, particularly in science and mathematics fields. This project will contribute to addressing the shortage of science and mathematics professionals in Argentina by supporting the funding needs for campus renovations at the National University of Technology in Buenos Aires.

The year 2026 marks the 140th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Argentina. With a Japanese-descendant community of approximately 65,000—the third largest in South America—Argentina is a country with deep ties to Japan. In Argentina, an increasing number of Japanese companies are anticipating business expansion in response to the Milei administration’s macroeconomic policies and deregulation measures. This initiative is expected to support Japanese companies in securing local talent in science and mathematics fields, while also promoting their overseas expansion by improving the local business environment.

(Note) JICA has pledged a contribution of 1 billion U.S. dollars to the Trust Fund Achieving Development of Latin America and the Caribbean (commonly known as TADAC), which is established within the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)—the largest development finance institution in Latin America and the Caribbean—and managed by IDB Invest, the IDB Group entity responsible for private sector investment and financing. TADAC provides co-financing to complement loans extended by IDB Invest to private-sector companies working toward the achievement of the SDGs. By contributing to TADAC through its overseas investment and financing operations, JICA aims to help close the funding gap necessary for achieving the SDGs in Latin America and the Caribbean and to contribute to the region’s sustainable socioeconomic development.
