On August 20, Awajiya will begin selling the collaborative ekiben “Maritime Education Organization Hippari-dako Rice” at all Awajiya locations. The price is 1,780 yen.
In collaboration with the Japan Maritime Education and Training Institute (JMETS)—an independent administrative agency that has trained many of the seafarers who support Japan’s shipping industry—we have created original ceramic dishes featuring depictions of the large training sailing ships “Nippon Maru” and “Kaiō Maru.” These dishes are topped with simmered octopus, chopped conger eel, shredded omelet, rapeseed blossoms pickled in soy sauce, simmered shiitake mushrooms, Tosa-style simmered bamboo shoots, simmered carrots, and octopus tempura. The wrapping paper features an octopus dressed as a sailor holding the international signal flags “U” and “W,” with the Nippon Maru sailing across the open ocean in the background.
The company, which has long collaborated with various government agencies and public institutions to create products that raise awareness of their activities, says that through this collaboration, it has deepened understanding of the social issue of the seafarer shortage and created a design that conveys respect and gratitude for the seafarers who support Japan’s shipping industry.
