On July 21, JAL reached an agreement with U.S.-based JetZero to collaborate on the operation, maintenance, and design of the “Z4,” a next-generation medium-sized commercial jet airliner.
The Z4 is a passenger aircraft featuring a “Blended Wing Body” (BWB) design, in which the wings and fuselage are integrated. By using the entire main wing to generate lift, it reduces aerodynamic drag, aiming to improve fuel efficiency by 30–50 percent and reduce operating costs compared to current mid-size aircraft.
With a standard seating capacity of 250 seats and a range of approximately 9,300 km, it is capable of flying from Tokyo to the northern part of the U.S. West Coast. Furthermore, while featuring a cabin that is more spacious than that of conventional aircraft, it is said to be compatible with existing airport infrastructure, such as parking bays and boarding bridges.
The collaboration between the two companies is aimed at commercialization in the early 2030s, including the acquisition of type certification, and will involve incorporating JAL’s operational, cabin service, aircraft maintenance, and ground handling will be incorporated into the Z4 design from the earliest stages, and the partnership will also involve verifying airport infrastructure and operational methods, as well as examining future maintenance and repair systems.
