JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met for the first time with UNHCR High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Barham Saleh at JICA Headquarters on May 18.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka expressed his congratulations to High Commissioner Sirleja, who took office in January of this year, and expressed his desire to further deepen the more than 20 years of cooperation between JICA and UNHCR in the future.
In response, High Commissioner Saleh referred to UNHCR’s goal of reducing by 50% by 2035 the number of refugees forced to rely on humanitarian assistance in the face of prolonged displacement and those in need of international protection, and the two exchanged views on job creation for refugees and assistance for their return.
UNHCR and JICA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2007 and have been working together, taking advantage of their respective characteristics, in assisting refugees and internally displaced persons in developing countries.
